The ODFW Commissioners met in Salem on Friday, January 17th. The Native Fish Society’s Petition to ban harvest of wild winter Steelhead was on the agenda. ODFW made a presentation describing the winter wild Steelhead population in the Southwest Zone as healthy and not threatened. ODFW concluded that there was no justification for this petition, and recommended that commissioners reject it. Fifty people testified for and against the petition. Members of the Oregon Coast Anglers, South Coast Anglers and Oregon South Coast Fishermen were among those testifying against the NFS petition. Commissioners voted four to two to reject the NFS petition. This is a win for anglers who would like to harvest a fish in this case, a Winter Steelhead. The testimony of concerned anglers counts, we need to make our voices heard.
